For years, businesses built websites primarily for two audiences:

  1. potential customers

  2. Google

That model is changing.

What are AIO and GEO?

AI Optimisation (AIO) means designing content and website structure so that AI-powered systems can accurately understand the business.

3. Structure information clearly

The visitor should not need to decode marketing language to understand the offer.

Important information should also not depend entirely on animations, sliders or interactive elements. Search systems must be able to access the underlying page content.

4. Establish a consistent business identity

AI systems may encounter a company through its website, business listings, directories, reviews, professional profiles and external publications.

The information found across those sources should be consistent.

That includes:

  • company name

  • website address

  • location

  • services

  • contact information

  • industry focus

  • descriptions of the business

When one source describes the company as a software consultancy, another as a marketing agency and another as a general web designer, the business becomes difficult to classify.

5. Use structured data correctly

Structured data gives machines an additional description of the content visible on a page.

Structured data does not guarantee inclusion in Google or AI-generated answers. It supports understanding and must accurately match the information visitors can see on the page.

6. Prove your claims

Claims such as “trusted”, “experienced” or “results-driven” provide little evidence on their own.

A stronger website demonstrates credibility through:

  • client feedback

  • transparent pricing

  • named authors

  • company information

  • original research or technology

  • clear explanations of methodology

AI systems need sources they can verify and connect with other information.

A business that clearly documents its work is easier to reference than one relying entirely on promotional statements.

7. Make sure AI search tools can access the website

The strongest content cannot be used when important pages are blocked or technically inaccessible.

Pages should:

  • return the correct status code

  • be accessible without logging in

  • appear in the sitemap

  • use crawlable internal links

  • avoid accidental noindex directives

  • provide meaningful page content

  • load reliably on mobile and desktop

  • avoid blocking relevant crawlers unintentionally

Google requires pages to be crawlable and indexed before they can appear as supporting links in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Claude can retrieve current web information through web search, while Anthropic explains that blocking Claude-SearchBot or Claude-User may reduce a website's visibility in Claude's search results.

Crawler access does not guarantee a recommendation. Blocking access can, however, remove the possibility altogether.

8. Build for local relevance

For many businesses, being recommended nationally is less valuable than being recommended to the right customer nearby.

A website should clearly connect:

service + customer + location

This may include:

  • a clearly defined service area

  • regional case studies

  • complete business details

  • relevant local terminology

  • consistent business listings

  • genuine location-specific information

Creating dozens of almost identical pages with only the town name changed adds little value.

Local pages should explain what the company does in that area and why it is relevant to customers there.

9. Do not build a generic AI website

AI tools have made it possible to generate a polished website in minutes.

They have not removed the need for:

  • information architecture

  • secure development

  • accessibility

  • responsive design

  • technical SEO

  • conversion planning

  • content strategy

  • performance optimisation

  • proper testing

Many AI-generated websites look modern because they reproduce the same visual patterns.

They may still contain vague content, weak page hierarchy, missing metadata, broken forms, insecure dependencies and no clear route from visitor interest to enquiry.

A website is not successful because it looks finished.
